Why Business Get 1300 Numbers

I see a lot of questions on forums and such as to why businesses get 13,1300 or 1800 numbers.

Let’s clear it up by defining the pro’s and con’s. By the end of this I’m sure you will understand the businesses decision to get one.

First of, lets discuss the Cons:

  • It costs more for mobile callers to call as the call type is outside of most capped plans.
  • It costs money to have the service connect in terms of monthly fees and you pay per minute rates for every call you receive.
  • 13, 1300 and 1800 numbers are local to Australia, so international callers cannot use them. The only option here is to have a international number listed.

Pros:

  • You only have 1 number for the life of your business. Most businesses start small from a garage and grow into and office. As this growth occurs the telephone number at each location will be different and incur loss of business due to a change in contact details, a cost for re-branding and notifying existing customers of the change.
  • Mobile operators can keep their personal mobile number private and only give out the 1300 number.
  • Small organizations can use 1300 numbers to attract larger clients by giving the impression of having a more established operation.
  • 1300 numbers have the ability to overflow calls to mobiles, answering services and answering machines. This can increase the number of calls taken and sales generated as there is more likely hood of the call being taken.
  • They also have the ability to setup a time based routing configuration. This is usually used to automatically put the 1300 number to an answering machine or answering service after hours.
  • Larger organizations and franchises can route calls by geographical location and time, saving callers time waiting in queues to get to the correct department or store.

As you can see the pro’s certainly outweigh the cons in terms of bringing value to the business. The cons are relevant in terms if monthly fees associated with the ongoing connection, but the mobile and international issues can be reduced by providing a fixed line or a VOIP number on any branding providing it is easy to update. This gives mobile callers and international callers a cheaper option to contact you.
